How to Get a Water-Walking Mount

NOTE: This guide was written in 2018 and was correct and up-to-date at that time. Things change, however, so please leave a comment if anything needs to be added or changed.

With the advent of the Battle for Azeroth expansion and its lack of flying, many people realized they needed a mount that could walk on water. Here’s a quick guide on how to get them.

Method #1: Pandaria Anglers (easy)

Get exalted reputation with The Anglers so you can purchase the Azure Water Strider. Requires about 10-15 minutes each day for three weeks.

You can do this with your main, but I recommend you take a lvl 90+ alt with flying, send it to Pandaria, have it hang out at the Anglers’ headquarters in Krasarang Wilds at (68.4, 43.4). Each day, log in to the character and do the three dailies for 1500 reputation. When you reach revered, purchase Grand Commendation of the Anglers, which will double your reputation gains. You’ll have the mount in about three weeks with very little effort.

If you’re feeling impatient, do the Nat Pagle special fish dailies as well. Those are heavily RNG-dependent, but it typically took me about 15-20 minutes to catch all three.

Method #2: Draenor Garrison (hard, but NOW NOW NOW!)

[Note: If you haven’t already unlocked the level 3 garrison fishing shack blueprints, I do not recommend this method.]

If you really, really want the mount as soon as possible, you can get the Crimson Water Strider from Nat Pagle in your Draenor garrison. It takes “Best Friend” status and 100 coins, which are a pain to get, but there’s no daily/weekly limit to how many you can obtain. Note that you’ll spend much more game time this way, but you can get the mount a single day if you binge this.

To get the 100 coins, obtain Nat Pagle as a follower then fish up Lunkers, as specified in this guide. Note that if you haven’t previously earned any reputation with Nat Pagle, you may have to catch up to 120 lunkers to get him to “Best Friend” status.

Method #3: Pandaria Timewalking

If you don’t want to fish, it’s possible to get max reputation with the Anglers by purchasing reputation tokens from Mistress Xia, the timewalking event vendor.

There are some limitations:

  • Mistress Xia is only available during the Pandaria timewalking event, which occurs about every four months.
  • Based on my calculations you’ll need 5250 Timewarped Badges, which is a lot.

If you are determined to use this method, however, read on.

You turn in 50 badges for an account-bound item that gives 300 reputation to the Anglers. Assuming you purchase the Grand Commendation of the Anglers as soon as possible, and assuming it works with the timewalking reputation items, you’ll need approximately 5250 badges to go from zero to exalted. If you don’t already have a bunch of them, then you’re going to have a tough time getting that many in a single timewalking week. You get about 35-40 badges per dungeon, plus each character gets a one-time 500-badge bonus for completing the first dungeon. The best way to quickly accumulate badges is to have multiple alts each do a single dungeon, where they will get 500+ badges apiece. So figure 10 max-level alts each doing one dungeon run.
