Northrop has developed a system that uses lasers to shoot down rockets, missiles, mortars, etc., generating a virtual shield over an area 10km in diameter. They expect to sell quite a few of them to airports and other vulnerable installations.
UPDATE: Apparently the Northrop system is still a prototype (link) and is not ready for deployment. It could really be useful in Israel right about now.
This really comes as no surprise to me. The DVD-R vs. DVD+R format war was resolved by simply making the players compatible with both formats, and now Ricoh has managed to do the same with HD-DVD and Blu-ray. Expect to see a lot more dual-format players.
Apparently our highways have actually become safer since the federal 55 MPH speed limit was repealed. This is in stark contrast to the doomsayers back in 1995 who predicted a massive increase in injuries. Personally, I believe the repeal of the 55 MPH speed limit to be the single most useful thing that the Republican majority has managed to do in the last 12 years.
Here’s another one of those crazy web ideas similar to The Million Dollar Homepage. This guy started with a single red paperclip, hoping to trade it up until he got a house. Which he has indeed managed to do.
The short answer is that you can’t. But there are exceptions.
This video shows how a Mimosa plant reacts to a stimulus (in this case, the heat from a lighter). The whole leaf shrivels up as if it were dead. There’s a link at the bottom to another video with a stronger reaction in which all four leaves curl up.
This woman had a very bad experience after she recycled her cell phone prior to the end of the calling plan. It would also be a good idea to wipe the saved numbers and any personal information. I wonder if that can be done all at once via some sort of reset function?
