News and other tidbits that Chad Cloman finds interesting enough to share

On May 11th, the price of a first-class stamp will rise to 44¢. The linked article suggests that you stock up on forever stamps. As for me, I’m still going through my 41¢ Yoda stamps.

Update: The Presurfer clued me in to this site, which simply displays the current price of a USPS first-class stamp.
The linked video shows what an Imperial occupation of San Francisco might look like.

Here at the Chad’s News network command center, the champagne is flowing and celebration is in the air. LucasFilm has announced that an animated Star Wars feature film, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, will be released in North American theaters on Friday, August 15, 2008. The theatrical release will be followed by a related television series on the Cartoon Network and TNT. Long live Star Wars! More Star Wars!
According to this BBC article, we can expect to see more 3-D movies in the future. Apparently the technology has come quite a ways since Jaws 3-D. I’ve also heard rumors that George Lucas will be re-releasing the Star Wars movies in 3-D.

Long-time Chad’s News readers are already aware of the contest to select one Star Wars stamp for mass production. Yoda was the winner, narrowly beating out Darth Vader, and his stamp will be released tomorrow, Oct. 25th (available in sheets of 20 stamps).

Regular Chad’s News readers know that I tend to go a bit overboard when it comes to Star Wars (did I mention that I own over 80 Star Wars books?), but I think this one is interesting enough to share. ABC News has a slide show of 12 Star Wars actors, giving modern-day pictures and describing what they’ve been up to since the original trilogy ended.

Starting next Monday (2007-05-14), first class postage in the US will increase to 41 cents. In addition, the previously mentioned “forever” stamps are already on sale. These forever stamps are a great deal, but I’m spending my money on the Star Wars stamps.

A company named NeuroSky has developed brainwave reading technology that can detect when a person is focusing on a fixed image. They created a prototype toy lightsaber that lights up when the user concentrates on it. When his/her attention wanders, it turns off. Apparently this is just the beginning of what they can determine from reading brainwaves. The initial market will be toys and games, but I think it could be used in a wide range of applications.

The US Postal Service web site has free, downloadable, high-resolution images of the upcoming Star Wars stamp set. Not only is the full sheet available, but each stamp also has its own download. Some of the images are impressive. You can also vote for your favorite stamp. The winner will be made into its own sheet of 20 stamps, while the losers will only be available on the mixed, 15-stamp sheet.

The US Postal Service has begun a 30th anniversary Star Wars tie-in by converting some of its drop boxes to look like R2-D2. Apparently there is more to come, including specially-themed stamps. The list of cities receiving the drop boxes is here, and a map of the ones “discovered” is here. My home town of Denver has one, but it’s not yet listed on the map.
