Honda Odometers Off By Up To 3.75%

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

CarHonda and Acura odometers are consistently recording mileage too high, in some cases by up to 3.75%. While this may help prevent you from getting a speeding ticket, it has definite ramifications for mileage-based leases and warranties. Honda has agreed to make its odometers more accurate and to center the error distribution at zero. In addition, for affected vehicles, they will extend the warranty mileage by 5% and pay back excess lease-mileage charges of $6 million.

Automatic Breathalyzer For Convicted Drunk Drivers

Saturday, November 25th, 2006

CarMothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and the US Dept. of Transportation are campaigning to put interlock devices in the cars of all convicted drunk drivers. The devices are essentially breathalyzers that keep the car from starting if alcohol is detected above a preset level. Most states already require them for some offenders, but MADD wants them installed for everyone convicted of drunk driving—even first offenders.

Thursday, October 5th, 2006

Car

Think you want a hybrid? This article discusses the “new” diesel. Apparently diesel engines are more efficient than regular gasoline engines, but they’ve historically been much dirtier, to the point of failing emissions requirements.

Software Licensing Strands Cars

Monday, August 14th, 2006

Car

With the majority of software, when you purchase it you are actually buying a license to use the software (rather than the software itself). This scheme was created fairly early in the life of PCs. Most people don’t notice it, but smart businesspeople are aware of the implications. It does occasionally cause problems, and a particularly funny one recently occurred in a New Jersey parking garage.

Higher Speed Limits Have Not Resulted In More Accidents

Speed Limit Sign

Apparently our highways have actually become safer since the federal 55 MPH speed limit was repealed. This is in stark contrast to the doomsayers back in 1995 who predicted a massive increase in injuries. Personally, I believe the repeal of the 55 MPH speed limit to be the single most useful thing that the Republican majority has managed to do in the last 12 years.

What Happens When You Obey The Speed Limit

Saturday, May 13th, 2006

Car

Recall that the speed limit is an upper limit, not a lower one. A group of people decided to see what would happen if they all drove 50 MPH in the 55 MPH zone of an interstate highway. They lined up next to each other, taking up all four lanes and forcing the cars behind them to also go 50. The results were impressive—one driver lost his side mirror while passing them on the shoulder. (Note: the sound quality of the video isn’t that good, but I still found it worth watching.)
