Obviously, as a chemist, I was well aware of this problem before our vet pointed it out. All the South American plants we relish as stimulants (coffee, cocoa, coca) produce their various compounds to ward off pests and it just so happens that we've evolved enzymes to deal with them, whereas the dog hasn't. Yes, it’s a pretty serious issue for dog lovers. Obviously, as a chemist, I was well aware of this problem before our vet pointed it out. All the South American plants we relish as stimulants (coffee, cocoa, coca) produce their various compounds to ward off pests and it just so happens that we’ve evolved enzymes to deal with them, whereas the dog hasn’t.
