Yes, it's a pretty serious issue for dog lovers. Obviously, as a chemist, I was well aware of this problem before our vet pointed it out. All the South American plants we relish as stimulants (coffee, cocoa, coca) produce their various compounds to ward off pests and it just so happens that we've evolved  enzymes to deal with them, whereas the dog hasn't.

That anti-spam question is a killer at this time of night, after a few glasses of wine, a heavy New Year party and a stomach bug!
